How We Met

April and Ben met 9 years ago in law school. Ben was a second-year student and the teacher’s assistant for April’s first-year contracts class. Their paths first crossed when Ben offered to give feedback on the students’ first homework assignment — writing a dissenting opinion. Before long they were studying together in the library and getting lunch near campus. It became clear over time that they shared a sense of humor and loved to laugh together about little absurdities in daily life. They also soon realized they shared an appreciation for the finer things (steak dinners, going to the symphony, etc.) and the simple things (McDonald’s chicken nuggets, playing video and board games, etc.). They also found they had a mutual love of classic music — the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack being an early favorite.

The Proposal

In September of 2020, Ben and April decided to escape California’s covid lockdown and travel to Salt Lake City, Ben’s hometown, for some fresh air. They went hiking together up Millcreek Canyon and, as the sun was setting and they had reached the summit overlooking the beautiful Salt Lake valley, Ben dropped to one knee and asked April to marry him. She said yes!

Nessa Blanche Tinsay

Nessa and April first met pledging for their Filipina sorority in San Francisco in 2009. They quickly became best friends -- the once-in-a-lifetime type of best friends that understand each other without having to say a word. They continue to be constants in each other lives, even after April moved back down to Southern California in 2013.
Nessa describes Ben and April as follows: "If April and Ben took a compatibility test they would absolutely ace all categories at 100%. Obviously, they can probably ace any test but this is simply because of the fact that they are PERFECT for each other. I’ve never known a couple that can balance their relationship with their demanding law careers while sharing their love and enthusiasm for music, chess, tennis, Nintendo gaming, rock climbing, hiking, tv shows and Disneyland, just to name a few. Trust me there’s way more but my absolute favorite thing about them is how they care and support each other in any part of their life. Their busy lives do not stop them pursuing whatever they set their mind to and their perfect compatibility lets them passionately follow not only their shared interests but also their own. The way they find the time to do all of the above together plus their unconditional love and support on each other is nothing short of remarkable. I’m so happy my April found her perfect match in Ben. ❤️"

Whit Bertch

Ben's older brother, Whit, has seen Ben and April's relationship from when they were first dating during law school in 2013 since Whit also attended Chapman Law. The couple very much appreciates the role that Whit has played in their relationship, including all of his advice and support.
Ben and April are thankful that Whit lives in Southern California because they are able to spend time with him engaging in some of their favorite activities such as chess, yoga, indoor rock climbing, and discussing their cases.
"My favorite thing about April and Ben as a couple is their shared passion for rock climbing. My favorite memory with them was hiking Yosemite’s Half-Dome — what an unforgettable bucket-list experience!"
Image 1659837706

Malia Aguilar Cristal

Although Malia is April's sister-in-law, April has come to lean on Malia as if they were related by blood. April and Ben appreciate the role Malia has played in the Cristal Family, and could not imagine their lives without her creativity and ability to bring everyone together.
When asked about her favorite memory with April and Ben, Malia said: "Our double dates to Disneyland are my favorite memories. Walking around the park and always ending the night with a churro!"
Image 1660634779

Caleb Bertch

Caleb is Ben’s younger brother. As siblings, they enjoy many of the same hobbies and interests, such as rock climbing, cycling, and a good James Bond movie. Caleb has always made April feel like she was part of the family, and April has always appreciated how she can have deep conversations with Caleb on a broad range of topics.

Caleb's favorite memories with Ben and April were two memorable hiking trips: "Ben and April share a common affinity for spending quality time in the natural beauty of America's National Parks. As such, some of my favorite experiences with Ben and April stem from spending time together in nature and notably hiking the famed 'Angel's Landing' in Zion National Park as well as the 'Half Dome Cables' in Yosemite."
Image 1659837828

Janelle Laberinto McCarthy

Janelle and April first met in San Francisco, pledging for the same Filipino sorority as Stacey and Nessa. Their friendship grew even stronger after college. April and Ben appreciate Janelle's unequaled strength, loyalty, and honesty and appreciate her early support of their relationship.
April is the godmother to both of Janelle's beautiful daughters, Alexandra and Evelyn, who will be in the wedding as the couple's flower girls.
Janelle said the following about the couple: "April and Ben are the first lawyer couple I know. And while I may not fully understand all of their jargon, one of my favorite things about them is the facial expressions that come after what I perceive to be a very sophisticated inside joke between them. The looks on their faces are a blend of understanding, exasperation, and love. And their extreme height difference makes it even better."
Image 1659837945

Marko Angelo Cristal

Marko is April’s younger brother and she considers Marko to be her first best friend. They have always been close, sharing an early love of playing musical instruments and reading. Ben and Marko quickly bonded over their shared love of video games, such as Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

In addition to video games, Ben and April appreciate how they are able to have many varied experiences with Marko, such as analyzing chess positions and puzzles, and appreciating the details at Disneyland.

When asked about his favorite memories with Ben and April, Marko said: "Some of my favorite memories of April and Ben are the times we spent at Disneyland as well as playing chess!"
Image 1659838002

Stacey San Pedro

April first met Stacey in San Francisco, pledging for a sorority with Nessa and Janelle. When April and Stacey are together it's as if there is nobody else in the room!
April and Ben appreciate Stacey developing her own friendship with Ben, and always making sure Ben feels welcome when he's with April's friends.
When asked about her favorite thing about April and Ben, Stacey said: "[Y]ou both are such a good team, and you put so much importance on having fun. I love that you both bring out the best versions of each other. You guys are truly meant to be."
Image 1659838137

Alexander Mig Cristal

Alex is April’s youngest brother. Even from a young age, April has always looked to Alex as an example of genuine kindness and selflessness. Ben has always felt connected with Alex due to their common competitive spirit, and drive to practice and improve in their chosen hobbies.

Ben and April appreciate Alex’s sense of humor, including their shared ability to find the hilarity in the absurd, including laughing at silly tweets and memes.

When asked about his favorite thing about Ben and April, Alex said: "One of my most favorite thing about April and Ben is how much they love playing, discussing, watching twitch/YouTube streams, going to tournaments, being immersed everything about CHESS with each other. Both are fiercely competitive in their own way too, and it makes it very wholesome to watch them compete and connect from this beautiful game of Chess."

Nikki and Johnathan Siu

The lighting of a unity candle symbolizes wisdom and guiding light to support the couple in their marriage.
April and Ben could not think of a better couple than Nikki and John to light their candles! April and Ben look up to the Sius in their ability to balance all aspects of their lives while keeping their relationship the main focus. April first met Nikki in San Francisco in 2009 when they were both pledging for the same Filipina sorority; John was pledging for a fraternity at the same time.
Nikki and John's favorite memory of Ben and April was the time they visited them in SoCal, closed out the rooftop bar at the JW Marriott in Anaheim, and had an open conversation about growing as people and in their careers.
Image 1659838970

Roeh and Nick Caramadre

The draping of the veil over the couple during the ceremony symbolizes the couple's unity in marriage as they face the world as a one unit.
Ben and April look up to Roeh and Nick in their ability to face challenges together while still prioritizing new life experiences. April first met Roeh in 2009 when they pledged for the same Filipina sorority in college. They also lived together for a year in San Francisco.
Nick and Roeh had the following to say about April and Ben: "Whether it's a luxury trip to Vegas or just a Celine Dion sing-a-long at the apartment, we love that any time spent together with y'all is filled with laughter, some banter, and genuine love." Roeh and Nick also enjoy when "Ben and April 'lawyer duel' on a random topic and try to reason each other out of nothing important."
Image 1659839110

Grace Bertch

The cord (also known as the yugal or lasso) is shaped in an infinity symbol for the bond of everlasting love and fidelity between the couple.
April and Grace have become very close and April is excited to officially call Grace her sister-in-law! The couple feels like they share a younger sister in Grace, and their love for Grace has helped them become closer to each other. Ben and April appreciate how supportive Grace has been of their relationship, and how much fun they've had throughout the years -- including visiting Disneyland during Christmastime!
Grace's favorite memory of Ben and April involves Ben and April's recent April 2022 trip to Grace's new home in Leander, Texas: "the day we went tubing down the Comal River because it was an altogether great day of P. Terry's, a nice float, laughs, and dinner after."
Image 1659839308

Nelson Vu

Nelson was present the first time April and Ben met in the cafeteria at the law school! Ben and April thought that it would be fitting for Nelson to help bind them together as a Cord Sponsor since he has been there since day 1.
Nelson is April's best friend from law school and has been supportive of April and Ben's relationship from the very beginning.
Nelson's has two favorite memories with Ben and April. The first being a recent trip to Disneyland in January 2022 to celebrate April's birthday. "We had drinks, ate, and walked around the park. It was a chill night and I had such a nice time with both of them." The second is after day 1 of their Coachella trip in April 2018. "The Uber line was over an hour wait. We wandered the streets together looking for a ride home. Finally, we found a man with a van to drive us home and Ben paid the driver via Venmo since he was off the clock and not working for Lyft."
Image 1659845400

Ramy Magdi Sidhom

The wedding coins (also known as arras or arrhae) represent provision, welfare, and prosperity in marriage.
Ramy is one of April's best friends from high school, whom she considers as a brother. Ramy also lived with Ben and April from 2016 to 2020. Ben and April appreciate Ramy's friendship and constant support of their relationship, and that Ramy always reminds them that living a wealthy and prosperous life includes new experiences and spending time with family and friends.
Ramy's favorite memory of Ben and April involves a memory from their time as roommates. "Having lived with April and Ben for years, trying to pick just one favorite memory is almost impossible. We’ve shared so many great experiences and moments together, but one keeps coming to mind. There was an unspoken rule in our apartment that mandated that anytime Ben did a dance, April and I had to immediately drop everything that we were doing and join in the dance party…no questions asked. Those were my favorite moments with them, the three of us just having our own individual dance parties wherever we were in the apartment, no words, just moves."
Image 1659839606

Russell Valenzuela

The 13 coins represent either Jesus and his twelve disciples or the twelve months of the year (plus one for prosperity), depending on the interpretation.
Russell has been one of April and Ben's most loyal friends (he has been April's best friend since high school and has become like a brother to April and her siblings). In addition to his friendship, the couple very much appreciates their conversations with Russell on a broad range of topics because of Russell's varied interests and reasoned mind.
In addition to spending time with Ben and April watching superhero movies or random videos on YouTube, Russell's favorite memory of April and Ben include their trips to the desert. "Watching tennis at Indian Wells and enjoying our time at Coachella so much that we didn't talk to our company while eating."

The arena also hosted the figure skating competitions during the 2022 Winter Olympics, including being the venue for American Sarah Hughes' gold medal skates and the major scandal during the pairs competition between Jamie Salé/David Pelletier (Canada) and Elena Berezhnaya/Anton Sikharulidze (Russia).

Utah Scones

A History of Utah Scones

A must-eat when you are in Salt Lake! A Utah scone is a piece of fried dough similar to an Indian Fry Bread. Crispy on the outside, light and fluffy on the inside -- topped with powdered sugar, butter, and honey! Although there are multiple locations in the city to get these scones, Ben recommends the following locations:
